Abstract

The research summarized in this report developed a practical monitoring technique to indicate the presence of pathogens in receiving waters, based on validating indicator organisms or polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assays. The project team also developed and validated a simple, low-cost method to concentrate 10-L volumes of water, which smaller utilities could use to reduce the volume of large samples for shipping to outside laboratories. Water and wastewater professionals can use the results of this project to help them decide which molecular methods to introduce into pathogen monitoring and source water protection programs.
