Abstract

This project investigated how cationic polymers contribute to NDMA formation, and identified actionable information that water agencies can implement to reduce cationic polymer-derived NDMA formation. The project focused primarily on polyDADMAC, because it is the most commonly used cationic polymer to improve coagulation, particle settling, and filterability at U.S. drinking water facilities. Polyamine, used by fewer utilities, can also form NDMA, and was a secondary research focus. Published in 2019.
